Winter weather can be hard on a home or office heating system. When temperatures fluctuate like they do in North Texas, little problems that go undetected can turn into big ones. According to research by Angie’s List, up to 75 percent of HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) emergency service calls during winter months are related to a lack of proper maintenance.

Top HVAC Maintenance Tasks

“During the winter months, we perform very specific inspections related to the heating mechanisms within the system,” said Jacob Wheeler of Comfort Technologies Air Conditioning and Heating in Arlington, TX. “It’s very common to find cracks and rust, but you have to know where to look. It varies depending on the brand of heat exchanger or unit. The good news is that if you address these problems early, you’ll extend the life of your system and help prevent major breakdowns.”

When cracks, rust spots and holes are present, this could also be a sign of a potential health hazard. Carbon monoxide leaks, which are hard to detect because the gas is colorless and odorless, can lead to headaches, dizziness, nausea and even death. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), over 5100 people in the United States die every ten years from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Proper maintenance can detect signs of problems, and it can also save you money.

“A clogged or damaged system can restrict air flow,” said Jacob, “which is more expensive to run and bad for your health. On the other hand, a clean system can cut your heating and A/C bill by 5 to 15 percent.”

In addition to performing a multi-point, all-system checkup, Comfort Technologies carefully examines several heater-related systems during its wintertime inspection, including:

  • Amp draw readings on all motors
  • Gas leak inspection
  • Heat exchanger check
  • Proper operation of burners
  • Fan limits and switches
  • Temperature rise testing
  • Ignition assembly

Manufacturers of HVAC systems actually recommend performing regular system maintenance twice each year: winter and summer. Fortunately, Comfort Technologies offers an Annual Comfort Agreement which includes two thorough system inspections and maintenance visits per year.
